Q7. Why is windstorm excluded from my homeowner's policy?

The area of Pine Island and most of Matlacha is considered at high risk for damage from windstorm and hurricane. The state of Florida, in an effort to retain homeowner companies willing to write in our area and other high risk areas, has allowed homeowner companies to exclude the peril of windstorm and hurricane. The state of Florida then provides wind and hurricane coverage to residents in the high risk areas through a separate wind and hurricane policy. The company that administers those policies is Citizens Property Insurance.

Citizens also provides other types of policies to Florida residents who cannot obtain coverage in the standard marketplace.

Because Citizens Insurance issues policies in areas where other companies will not, their premiums are higher than standard market companies.
