Q17. Insurance Question of the Month: "What is Ordinance and Law Coverage?"
It provides coverage (typically up to 25% of the total coverage amount) for increases in the cost of reconstruction, repair, or demolition of property that result from local laws or ordinances regulating the property location. This coverage is automatically added to all new policies sold in Florida (per state statute) unless you sign a rejection form refusing the coverage. This coverage will add about 5% to your homeowner premium (varies by company). Because building regulations have changed so much on Pine Island in recent years, it is a good idea to have this coverage in place.
It is possible to increase this coverage to 50% on most polices. We recommend you consider this option, especially if you have an older home that may need many updates to meet current building codes.
